List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
None
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
This revision is related only
the mechanics of the curriculum and only improves the manner in which the 10
goals are already addressed.
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
Background: Following a department split, the Department of Health, Nutrition and
Exercise Sciences became the Departments of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology
(KAAP) and Behavioral Health and Nutrition (BHAN). KAAP retains the name
“Exercise Science” for one of its majors.
We are taking this opportunity to improve the mechanics of this major,
its three concentrations (Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics & Motor
Control, Medical Scholars) and our two minors (Exercise Science, Strength and
Conditioning) by renumbering some classes, consolidating some 3-credit courses
with their 1-credit lab sections.
In this proposal:
1.
The
HESC course prefix has been replaced with the KAAP prefix except for HESC435
which has become BHAN435.
2.
KAAP430/431
are the 3 credit Exercise Physiology course and its co-requisite lab
section. 431 will be deactivated and the
lab will become part of 430, elevating it from 3 credits to 4.
3.
HESC440
is being removed from the minor because the little content that is relevant for
the National Strength and Conditioning Certificate exam is more than adequately
covered in KAAP447
4.
KAAP433/431
are the 3 credit Applied Physiology of Activity course and its co-requisite lab
section. 431 will be deactivated and the
lab will become part of 430, elevating it from 3 credits to 4.
5.
KAAP320/317
are the 3 credit Principles of Strength and Conditioning course and its
co-requisite lab section. 317 will be
deactivated and the lab will become part of 320, elevating it from 3 credits to
4.
6.
KAAP
425 or 426 (Biomechanics) are being moved from pre-requisites to required
courses
7.
The
correct name of HESC430 in course inventory is “Exercise Physiology” and this
is being revised here.
8.
HESC
430 was incorrectly named as “Physiology of Activity” in the previous
catalog. The proposal includes a
revision with the correct name “Exercise Physiology”.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

MINOR IN STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING This minor is designed to provide students with in depth
understanding of the theory and practical considerations associated with
physical training to enhance strength and conditioning. Students successfully
completing the minor will be prepared to take the Strength and Conditioning Specialist
Certification examination offered by the National Strength and Conditioning
Association. Students applying for the minor must have completed at least
one semester of full time study with a minimum GPA of 2.25. Enrollment in the
minor for at least four semesters is necessary due to sequencing of courses.
A grade of C- or better in required courses is needed for successful
completion of the minor. CURRICULUM CREDITS
Prerequisite Courses: The following courses are identified as prerequisites for
selected courses in the minor. It is not necessary to take all of the
prerequisite courses prior to enrolling in the first course in the minor. See
course descriptions for the required courses to identify individual course
prerequisites. HESC 220 Anatomy and Physiology 3 Or HESC 309 Pre-Clinical Anatomy and Physiology I 4 HESC 350 Basic Concepts in Kinesiology 3
