List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

None

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

The revision related to the DLE supports goal #7 “Develop the ability to integrate academic knowledge with experiences that extend the boundaries of the classroom”

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

None

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

1. In the two concentrations in Exercise Science (Biomechanics & Motor Control / Exercise Physiology), the major requirements are being revised to include a Discovery Learning Experience course.  The revised catalogue will list three options for the DLE, stated as: “HESC463 Practicum in Exercise Science, or HESC485 Research in Exercise Science, or study abroad, or other DLE approved courses”.  HESC463 Practicum in Exercise Science and HESC485 Research in Exercise Science are existing departmental courses that are simultaneously being recommended for DLE approval status.  This change to the major supports the DLE requirements of the university.  There is no change in the credit requirements for either concentration because the course catalogue already listed the UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENT for 3 credits of DLE.  Both of the revised concentrations are below.

2.  The proposed revision is the deletion of HESC250, Motor Development, from the Biomechanics and Motor Control Concentration requirements within the Exercise Science major. The course has been tailored to meet the needs and interests of the Health and Physical Education (teacher preparation) majors, and is no longer appropriate for the Exercise Science majors. Replacing this content for students in this major and concentration will be HESC428/429, Motor Control and Learning, which will be offered annually beginning in fall 08.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

1 and 2.  See the DLE options listed in Major Requirements for both concentrations.  See the deletion of HESC250, Motor Development, from the Biomechanics and Motor Control Concentration within the Exercise Science major. HESC428/429 already appears among the concentration requirements.
