List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
HESC435, Physical Activity Behavior. This course
focuses on the behavioral aspects of exercise. The program revision shifts the
entire curriculum toward greater emphasis on the behavioral aspects of health.
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
Goal # 2: This new curriculum will allow students to
think critically to solve problems and
Goal # 5: also understand diverse ways that underlie
the search for knowledge in the Health Behavior Sciences.
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
The current industry/market for students includes an emphasis
on the behavior change approach. Previously, students found employment in the
fitness industry. However, now the industry is hiring individuals without a
college degree to work in fitness centers. The students are currently opting
for internships and experiences in public health, physician offices, and in
hospital based wellness centers. In
addition, the nation is experiencing an obesity epidemic and increases in poor
health behaviors (such as smoking) that is leading to an increased incidence of
coronary heart disease. This requires that students understand a behavior change approach to helping
individuals make lifestyle changes that impact their health. Therefore, the
revised curriculum allows students to obtain knowledge and skills in the behavior change processes. There is
also a requirement of a minor so that students can elect to have an area of
fitness (strength and conditioning minor), coaching, nutrition, or additional
fields.
The proposed changes will eliminate the existing
concentrations in Fitness Management and Leisure Service Management and replace
them with a single set of major course requirements in Health Behavior Science
and a required minor. The existing Admission Requirements for the major are
also being deleted.
