List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through

Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
Rationale:
This program is surrounded by large, strong undergraduate physical
education teacher preparation programs at other institutions, with current
(F09) enrollments in this major of 449 at
These other institutions identified in the first paragraph
have lower tuition rates and less stringent admission criteria as compared to
the
Enrollment in the UD major in Health
and Physical Education has been steadily declining for the past 12 years. The chart below displays the negative
enrollment trend for the major. There are currently 15 freshmen in HPEI (the Freshman
Interest Group,) and 15 sophomores, 23 juniors, and 22 seniors, or a total of
75 students enrolled in the program. There is no reason to suspect that this
trend will change.
Proposal:
We propose a four-year phase-out of
the Health and Physical Education major, with no new students admitted to the major after the
freshman interest students admitted in F10 apply for acceptance into the major
at the end of S11. (Freshmen interested in this major are initially admitted to
HPEI, the “freshman interest group” for the major and they must make formal application
to the HPE faculty for admission to the major at the end of the freshman year.)This
would mean that the last senior class of HPE majors would graduate in S14.
There is a plan for reassignment of
the faculty currently teaching in this program. Each of these six faculty,
in accordance with their individual training, can be assigned teaching
workloads associated with other department programs, including the master’s
program in health promotion, the undergraduate majors in health behavior
science and exercise science, and the interdisciplinary dance minor.
The phasing out of this major and the
associated reassignment of the teaching faculty to other program areas is part
of a larger plan for reorganization of the Department of Health, Nutrition, and
Exercise Sciences.
The overarching goal is to strengthen high quality programs within the
department. A separate document is being submitted that proposes and further
describes the plan for department reorganization.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
No curriculum change is proposed.
