List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
None
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education:

Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
1) Replace required course HESC343
Adapted Physical Education with an option for either HESC343 OR HESC 342
Introduction to Adapted Physical Activity.
Rationale: Both of these courses require structured, one-on-one student
interactions with physically challenged individuals from the community. HESC343
is restricted to Health and Physical Education (HPE) majors, and this has become
problematic because there are no longer enough students in the major to work
with the number of community individuals participating in the class. HESC 342
covers the same material and is open to all HNES students. Having more students in the class will give
the students a more meaningful experience working with people with special
needs.
2) Remove the following
statement from the University Catalog:
"Students must complete 45 hours of volunteer work with school-aged
children. A maximum of fifteen hours may be brought in from their high school
work experience. All volunteer work must be reviewed and accepted by the HPE
faculty".
Rationale: The HPE faculty have
been informed that we cannot require this.
3) Add the following
statement to the University Catalog:
"Achieve and Maintain the healthy zones on all components of health
related fitness as measured by Fitnessgram.*
*Accommodations will be made for
teacher candidates with documented health and physical impairments.
Rationale: This is a new performance indicator required
for NCATE accreditation and the HPE faculty must collect data on this.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
