List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
None
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revisedcurriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
The addition of MEDT 200 (The Language of Medicine)
will equipthe students with the medical terminology necessary for effective
oral and written communicationwith other health care professionals.
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
Revising curriculum:
1. Add MEDT 200 TheLanguage of Medicine (3 credits) as a
required course. It is important for graduates of medical laboratory science
programs to be able to interpret medical literature and to be able to
communicate with other members of the health professions. Having an
understanding of medical terminology early in the curriculum will help students
to improve their communication skills and to better comprehend scientific and
medical course materials. Until recently, a medical terminology course was not
available at the University of Delaware. Now that the course is available, it
should be a valuable part of the medical technology curriculum.
2. The breadth requirements have been revised to reflect the
new University breadth requirements.
3. The multicultural requirement is now required to be
fulfilled by one of the breadth courses in order to maintain the same total
credits required for graduation.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

From the
list of University breadth courses, students are required to take 3 credits
of Creative Arts and Humanities, 3 credits of History and Cultural Change,
and 3 credits of Social and Behavioral Sciences from 3 different subject
areas, earning a minimum grade of “C-” in each course. Students may not use a
cross-listed course from a subject area that has already been used or a
course in the subject area of their major, e.g., MEDT course to satisfy the
University’s breadth requirements. An additional 9 credits, 3 credits of
Creative Arts and Humanities, 3 credits of History and Cultural Change and 3
credits of Social and Behavioral Sciences, must be taken to meet the
requirements for the major; subject areas may be from the same discipline.
The completion of BISC 207, CHEM 103, or CHEM 104 at a C- or higher satisfies
the University breadth requirement for Mathematics, Natural Sciences and
Technology. One of the courses taken to satisfy the 21 credits of breadth
requirements must also satisfy the multicultural course requirement. |
