Document, highlighting the changes made to the original policy document.
List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon
these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there
are no new courses enter “None”)

Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
The profession has changed its name from Medical Technology
to Medical Laboratory Science to better define its role in health care.
In July 2009, the American Society for Clinical
Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP BOR) and the National Credentialing Agency
for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) signed an agreement forming a single
certification agency, ASCP Board of Certification (ASCP BOC), for medical laboratory
professionals. Medical laboratory
professionals with a Bachelor of Science degree are now certified as Medical
Laboratory Scientists (MLS).
Therefore, to be more in alignment with the titling of
the profession and its personnel, the certification issued, and other similar
programs in the country, we propose to change the name of the major from
Medical Technology to Medical Laboratory Science.
This proposed name change is also
more descriptive of the curriculum and the career, thus it is likely to be more
easily identified by students searching the university’s degree
offerings.
This is a change of name only and
would not alter the content of the major.
The course title of MEDT 100 and
MEDT418 are also being changed to reflect the name change of the Medical
Technology major to the Medical Laboratory Science major. The course content
has not been changed for either of these courses.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
