Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
The profession of Medical Technology was founded in the
1930’s by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Since this time the
profession has experienced several name changes. In July of 2009, the ASCP
Board of Registry and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory
Personnel (NCA) signed an agreement forming a single certification agency, ASCP
Board of Certification (ASCP BOC), for medical laboratory professionals. This
resulted in a name change for the profession to Medical Laboratory Science,
with a concurrent name change for certified medical laboratory professionals
with a Bachelor of Science degree to Medical Laboratory Scientist (
Changing the name of the department will more
accurately reflect the current educational and research missions of the
department. A proposal has been
submitted this year, to the Faculty Senate, requesting a name change for the
major from Medical Technology to Medical Laboratory Science. In 2009, a minor in Medical Diagnostics was
initiated, and this year (2011) a proposal for a new major in Medical
Diagnostics is being submitted. The current name of the department does not reflect
the broadening of the department’s teaching mission.
The proposed name change from the Department of Medical
Technology to the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences will, therefore, be
more representative of the profession, the diversity of the teaching mission,
and the overall professional goals of the department.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
