List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

 (Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

None

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

These course and progression revisions continue to support the Gen Ed goals of critical thinking/problem solving, working independently and collaboratively, and exploring diverse ways of thinking in the sciences, arts, and humanities.

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

None.

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

There are two revisions to this program.

1.  Changes to prerequisites for admission to the Accelerated Program:

These proposed changes impact the “MAJOR REQUIREMENTS: Support Courses” section in the curriculum shown in the side by side comparison.

These course and progression revisions allow more flexibility in course work for students interested in the Accelerated Nursing Program.  It coincides with the expectations of the BSN for RN requirements and other Accelerated programs in our region.

The School of Nursing offers the Accelerated Degree Nursing program, a course of study leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  Although there are 230 accelerated nursing programs nationally, ours is the only accelerated BSN program in Delaware. This program is designed for individuals who have already earned a degree in another field and would like to pursue a career in nursing.

Students in this program must complete all non-nursing prerequisites by any combination of the following:

transfer credit from the first degree

completion of coursework at University of Delaware

or transfer of pre-approved equivalent courses from other accredited institutions

There are 35 seats in the Accelerated program each year.  A review of the prerequisite requirements for 10 comparable accelerated programs in the tri-state area was conducted.  The main difference noted between our prerequisite requirements and the other local programs was an allowable “general course” equivalency instead of requiring transfer credit for a specific course.

The prescriptive nature of the current prerequisites is limiting because:

  1. There are limited seats for the required pre-requisite courses at the UD campus;
  2. Some UD pre-requisite courses are not available when prospective students need them;
  3. Some prospective students choose schools that allow general course equivalency, thus, we are losing qualified applicants.

Furthermore, faculty and staff workload related to evaluation of transferability of such prescriptive prerequisite courses is very labor intensive to determine transfer credit for specific courses at the University of Delaware. We would like to streamline this pre-admission process. Of the 200 prospective students evaluated each year, only 60 people complete these prerequisite courses and apply to the program each May.

We will continue to recommend that applicantscomplete pre-requisite courses at the University of Delaware when possible but many applicants will have completed these courses in other programs and/or states. The 62 credits of nursing courses at the University of Delaware will remain the same.

2.  Reorganization of Breadth Requirements to Comply with University Requirements:

The proposed changes allow the Accelerated Nursing program to comply with the new University of Delaware breadth requirements approved by the Faculty Senate in Spring 2010.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

Accelerated Nursing Degree Program

The Accelerated Degree Program is a course of study leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is designed for individuals who have a previously earned degree in another field and would like to pursue a career in nursing. Students in this program must complete all of the non-nursing requirements by transfer credit from their first degree, completion of coursework at the University of Delaware or by transfer of pre-approved equivalent courses from other accredited institutions. The program begins in the fall with three courses. In January, students begin their full time studies with a five week winter session. Coursework continues in the spring semester, followed by a nine week summer session, the fall semester, and concludes with the following January winter session. All pre-requisite science courses must be completed successfully prior to the first fall nursing course.

Students taking courses in an accelerated mode are sometimes out of sequence with on-campus course offerings. In these instances, lecture will be provided via CD-ROM or web, and augmented by group discussion sessions.

Eligibility for this course of study includes the following:

1.        An earned baccalaureate degree.

2.        GPA of 3.00 or greater

3.        Completion of all non-nursing courses prior to winter session of the program.

For more information or to make an appointment to discuss the accelerated program, please contact the School at 302-831-1253.  A sample curriculum plan may be viewed at the Accelerated Degree Program website (www.udel.edu/nursing/accelerated.html). Students who may need financial assistance in pursuing a second degree should contact the Financial Aid Office at 302-831-1534. Reference books on private financial aid sources are available in libraries or local academic institutions in your community.
