Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
Rationale for
Creation of RN to MSN (NP)Concentration
The School of Nursing offers multiple concentrations for licensed RN’s who wish to continue their education to the Bachelors or Masters level. For RN’s with an associate’s degree or diploma in nursing, we offer the RN to BSN, RN to MSN Clinical Nurse Specialist (Adult Health or Pediatrics) and RN to MSN Health Services Administration. The addition of the RN to MSN Nurse Practitioner (Family or Adult Health) would allow for RN’s to choose from all the nursing Masters concentrations the School of Nursing currently offers.
On a national level, nurse practitioner is a highly sought level of practice in the nursing profession. A recent report from HRSA stated, “Nurse practitioners comprised 63.2 percent of nurses in advanced specialties in 2008, accounting for 158,348 nurses. In 2004, 141,209 nurses were prepared as nurse practitioners; the number of nurse practitioners thus grew 12.1 percent over 4 years.”1 The demand for more nurse practitioners is projected to continue to increase as fewer primary practice physicians are available to serve the underserved populations in the U.S. No other university in the State of Delaware is currently offering a RN to MSN with a NP concentration.
Currently, the School of Nursing has numerous RN to BSN students who are interested in pursuing a MSN with a NP concentration. The proposed RN to MSN nurse practitioner concentration would allow them to complete the transition from Associates degree to a Masters degree in one progression. Currently these students plan to graduate the RN to BSN and then apply to the nursing graduate program in a NP concentration. This causes the student to take an additional 20 credits at the baccalaureate level. The proposed RN to MSN, NP concentration will increase the ease of completing graduate work for students and eliminate areas of content overlap between the BSN and MSN programs
.
The School of Nursing proposes to offer this RN to MSN nurse practitioner concentration of study in a combine distance/campus (hybrid) format. Thus providing nurses from the region with access to a streamlined graduate education format that meets their individual needs. The concentration requires no additional course development. All the required courses are already present within the RN to BSN or traditinal MSN nurse practitioner concentration currently offered by the Department of Nursing.
