List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
BHAN 416 is a new course being offered (pending
approval) that will combine and replace HESC 415 / 417.
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revisedcurriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
By eliminating these 2 courses and offering one new
course will allow students 3 credits of elective that they can use to take
other courses in a variety of areas that may broaden their understanding and
appreciation of different content areas.
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
Following a department split, HESC classes have become either
BHAN or KAAP and this change is reflected throughout this proposal.
Program Changes:
These classes (HESC 415 and
417) have been taught simultaneously in the past and it has been observed that
there is a tremendous amount of carryover of information across the two
classes. Therefore, having 2 classes is redundant when the material can be
taught in one class. By offering one course, BHAN 416 pending approval, instead
of 2, HPE majors will have 3 elective credits. The learning and practical
experiences of teaching will not be compromised and students will still have
the same field experiences at all three levels of education, elementary,
middle, and high school.
KAAP433/431 is currently
proposed with a revised KAAP433(4cr).
The 1 credit lab (KAAP431) is proposed to be merged with the
co-requisite 3 credit lecture (KAAP433) for simplicity in scheduling.
Program Policy Changes:
Deleting HPEI:The Health and Physical Education
Interest (HPEI) was created in fall 2003.
At that time it was necessary for freshman students to be in HPEI in
order for them to be able to schedule classes that had registration blocks on
them. After completing required courses,
obtaining a 2.5 GPA, a major GPA of 2.75, receiving passing scores on PRAXIS I,
and an acceptable introductory portfolio, students are then admitted to the
Health and Physical Education program. Having such restrictions on entrance to
a major has acted as a deterrent for students entering the program. The
interest area also creates restrictions to some classes therefore limiting the
flexibility of UD students to pursue courses in health and physical education
(HPE). The HPE faculty proposes the following revision allowing students to
enter the HPE major as freshmen bringing our program into alignment with other
teacher preparation programs at the University.
Please see the attached side by side comparison for catalog changes
regarding the program.
Adding Fitness testing of majors:This requirement is mandated by our
Specialty Program Association (The National Association for Sport and Physical
Education) under our NCATE accreditation standards for the Physical Education
portion of our dual certification major. The fitness testing is not part of any
grade for a class nor does it change the program of study. Students must
complete the fitness testing 1 time per year. The fitness testing sessions will
be offered two times during the fall semester (a day and evening session)
allowing students flexibility in scheduling. If students cannot attend either
session there will be an opportunity for scheduling personal testing sessions.
The HPE faculty will be in charge of test administration with some student
assistance if necessary. Aggregate results will be
reported to NCATE for accreditation purposes. There currently is not a statement
about this requirement in the most current course catalog for the program of
study. Please see the attached side by side comparison for catalog changes
regarding the fitness testing.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
