(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

HLPR 430 Behavior Change Strategies and Tactics

The focus of this course is on behavior change strategies and how to work with individuals in attempting behavior change. Students will work with various scenarios and case studies emphasizing these techniques. This course will contribute to the health behavior emphasis as part of the major.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

None

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

Several courses will be added to the major requirements. In accordance with the University of Delaware initiative to add more rigor in the form of math, HLPR 222 (Introduction to Epidemiology) was added. This course relies upon mathematical skills to study epidemiological analysis. The addition of BHAN 263 (Leadership Practicum) will provide students with practicum experience earlier in their college career, at the sophomore level. This may assist students determining a potential career path in the multidisciplinary field of Behavioral Health. In accordance with the field of behavior change, HLPR 430  (Behavior Change Strategies) was added to provide student s with skills in assisting individuals to make healthy behavior changes.

Deletion of BHAN422 (Organization and Administration).  Focus in the major is on behavior change, wellness, health promotion, and interventions. Pertinent organization and administration pieces were covered in other courses in the curriculum.

In order to streamline the Breadth Requirements, we are now using the categories of the University Breadth requirements for additional courses.
