Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
The major changes for the Masters are nine fewer credit hours of course work and an article-length Analytical Paper (AP) replacing the traditional Thesis. The nine fewer credit hours come from two Requirement Areas: 3 credits from Law and Institutions and 3 credits from Economics; and the 3 credit Analytical Paper instead of the 6 credit Thesis. This lowers the course load from 39 to 30 total credit hours, which is consistent with our School’s other Master’s degree programs. We have also limited the options under our Decision Analytics Requirement Area but the required number of hours is unchanged.
The AP is a full article-length paper simulating the preparation and submission of an article for publication in a journal. Since most policy research is presented in journals, we believe this format is a more useful and pragmatic for our graduates than a traditional thesis. It is journal-ready, concise, and will prepare students for communicating research in a format used in his/her career going forward. We also believed the more streamlined curriculum will result in shorter time-to-graduation. Note that the supporting proposal, defense, and committee will continue to follow SMSP guidelines for a traditional thesis.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.) See
example of side by side.
