Senate Library Committee
Resolution
Regarding the 2012/2013 Library Materials Budget
Whereas
the University of Delaware Library continues to grow and maintain a major
research collection that supports instruction, study and learning, and research
by faculty, students, and staff; and
Whereas
the cost of growing and maintaining a research collection, especially for
electronic resources, in a variety of formats such as ejournals, databases, and
ebooks, requires increased resources to even maintain the status quo; and
Whereas
the demand for access to electronic resources is very high and is expected to
increase significantly with the increasing availability of ebooks at a cost
often substantially higher than their print counter parts, and accompanied by
an increased demand for service; and
Whereas
the University of Delaware Path to Prominence states that “We must
comprehensively address the core facilities needed to support research and
education, including libraries...” and maintaining strong library collections
is essential to this support,
Therefore be it resolved that the Faculty Senate Library Committee strongly endorses a minimum of an annual 4% increase to the Library Materials Budget 2012/2013 in order to keep pace with the information needs of faculty, students and staff.
