Research Program Policies
Preference is given
to projects that are directly related to the educational work of the faculty.
Participation of students in research is considered important. University
research is traditionally basic in nature, but in those cases where the
University can be of service to the community, applied research is considered a
legitimate university activity. The University does not undertake research that
cannot be published or is militarily classified, nor does it house research
that bears no relationship to its educational activities.
This policy was reaffirmed and endorsed by Faculty Senate on
In rare cases, exceptions may be made to the restriction
on undertaking unclassified externally funded research with limits on
publication under these terms and conditions:
·
Requests for such an
exception must by made by the principal investigator, and substantively
reviewed and approved by the PI’s department chair and dean.
·
Requests for exceptions
should only be made in cases when at least one of the following apply:
o
The work is a
continuation of a significant and ongoing research effort;
o
The work is recognized by
the sponsor as being important to the national interest;
o
The work is in the
overall best interests of the University and its mission.
·
Requests will be sent to
the Research office for review and comment.
·
Requests must be approved
by the Provost.
Any exceptions which are made will be documented in the
Research Office, and a list of such exceptions will be submitted to the Faculty
Senate Research Committee and to the University Board of Trustees at least
annually.
This policy was revised to define the process by which exceptions to the restriction on undertaking research with limits on publication may be considered, and endorsed by the Faculty Senate, on XX/XX/2008.
