Official Charge of the Subcommittee on University Breadth Requirements
This Subcommittee is charged with the oversight of the University breadth requirement, and shall report to the Committee on Undergraduate Studies of the Faculty Senate.
The Subcommittee will have oversight of the breadth procedures including
ongoing review of the placement of courses within appropriate categories and
ensuring the availability of courses to those whose majors/minors do not
require the course (ie: that an appropriate number of
seats > 50% are open to non-majors/minors).
The Subcommittee's responsibility would not include the approval of breadth
courses. This function would remain within the individual colleges.
When the committee believes a course should be placed in a different category
from what was suggested by a college a discussion should take place between the
committee and college/department/program representatives leading to an agreed
upon resolution.
The Subcommittee should ensure that the intent of breadth remains inclusive and
that a substantial list of courses is maintained that encourages exploration by
the student in areas outside of their major.
The Subcommittee shall consist of one faculty representative from each of the colleges and a representative of the Undergraduate Studies Committee. The faculty representatives will be different from faculty members serving on the Undergraduate Studies Committee, and they will be selected by the Committee on Committees and Nominations (COCAN). These representatives will serve two year terms and will be arranged in sequence such that the terms of no more than four members shall expire in any academic year. Members may be reappointed for one additional term. One of the faculty members will be designated chairperson of the committee by COCAN.
