Cihan,
The Provost’s Office is proposing to have the Council of Deans review all P&T cases during the University’s promotion and tenure process. This change to the P&T process will require the Council of Deans to review all promotion and tenure cases simultaneously with their review by the Promotion and Tenure Committee of the University’s Faculty Senate. This review by the Deans will ensure that the quality of cases is uniformly strong across campus and that we continue to promote excellence in everything that we do as an institution of higher education. The Provost will take into account the reviews and recommendations of both of the committees during the review process.
In addition, we are proposing that the Council of Deans review major academic program initiatives (e.g., proposals for new academic majors and minors, as well as proposals for new MA and Ph.D. programs) that are submitted to the Faculty Senate, simultaneously with their review by either the Undergraduate Studies or the Graduate Studies Committees of the University’s Faculty Senate, as appropriate. This process will enable the Deans to formulate strategic academic priorities, ensure quality of programming, and prevent duplication of efforts, resulting in the strengthening of academic programs as well as a more efficient use of resources.
We are also proposing that these changes go into effect at the start of the 2010-11 academic year.
We are requesting that the above-mentioned initiatives be reviewed by the corresponding committees of the Faculty Senate. Please let us know if you need additional information.
Best regards,
Tom
