Subject: RE: UGS0358-44 Request to add a Global Studies Minor
(attachment)
Dear Steven,
Thanks for your email. I will
certainly do the things you request. Would it be ok if I can send the revised
proposal by the end of the week?
The only comment that I have is
regarding the “academic department” where the minor will be located.
Interdisciplinary majors (and minors) in the college of arts and sciences do
not have a departmental home. For instance, the majors in Asian Studies, Latin
American and Iberian Studies, and European Studies do not have a traditional
departmental home. So is the case with the minors in African and Islamic
studies. The advisors for these majors and minors are the directors of the
respective programs, which are all housed under the Center for Global and Area
Studies. In addition, we have minors in Medical Humanities, Political
Communication, and Interactive Media, to provide additional examples, and none
of them have departmental homes. I am cc’ing George Watson, the dean of Arts
and Sciences, if have additional questions regarding the academic homes for
these interdisciplinary programs. In the new proposal I will stress very
clearly that the academic advisor for the minors in Global Studies will be the
director of the Center for Global and Area Studies. I hope this clarifies the
issue.
Thanks again, and I will be in
touch
Julio

Subject: UGS0358-44 Request to add a Global Studies Minor (attachment)
Julio – UGS recently considered this request and requests
the following before it is considered further:
-
The proposal be divided
in request for 2 minors – one with a language and one without a language. As
is, the minor is much too confusing.
-
Specify the requirements more succinctly for
each minor.
-
Specify the languages that will be accepted in
the minor that requires a minor.
-
Clarify the “academic department” where these
minors will be located and administered.
-
Provide a letter of support for the minors from
the Institute for Global Studies.
Please submit your revised proposals to Karren in the
faculty senate Office asap.
Thanks you – Steve
