B. Resolutions:
1. Recommendation from the Committee on Undergraduate Studies (Jeff Jordan, Chair) and the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Avron Abraham, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Charles Boncelet, Chair) for a new major in Sport Management (attachment) (attachment)
Whereas, each year a significant number of entering students have an interest in careers in sport management and wish to be academically prepared for such employment, and
Whereas, the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences has existing faculty and courses to support the offering of a major to package the courses and practicum experiences necessary to provide this preparation, and
Whereas, the Sport Management program has been successful since 2001 as a concentration within the Health Behavior Management major, be it therefore
Resolved, that a new major be established
in Sport Management within the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Exercise
Sciences on a provisional basis subject to review after
five (5) years (red print is a friendly amendment made at Faculty Senate
meeting 3-7-05).
2. Recommendation from the Committee on Undergraduate Studies (Jeff Jordan, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Avron Abraham, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Charles Boncelet, Chair) to add a New Coastal and Marine Geoscience Minor –Geology Department (attachment revised 2-1-05) (attachment revised 2-1-05)
Whereas, the establishment of a minor in coastal and Marine Geoscience would allow students interested in this area to focus their studies and to identify their expertise more clearly for the purpose of employment and post-graduate study, and
Whereas, the establishment of this minor does not require the additional of any new courses or library resources, and
Whereas, existing courses and resources will support parallel proposals to establish a new track within the Environmental Science (ENSC) major and a concentration in Coastal and Marine Science within the Department of Geology, be it therefore
Resolved, that a minor in Coastal and Marine Geoscience
be established within the Department of Geology to accommodate students who are
interested in this subject.
3.
Recommendation from the Committee on Graduate
Studies (Charles Mason, Chair) with the
concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Avron
Abraham, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Charles Boncelet, Chair) for
an extension of permanent approval of the Ph.D. in Entomology and Applied
Ecology(attachment2-14-05)
(attachment
2-14-05) (attachment)
(attachment)
Whereas, the
Ph.D. program in Entomology and Applied Ecology was initiated September 1,
2000, after provisional approval by the Faculty Senate in 1999, and
Whereas, the
expected time for completing a doctoral degree in this field of study for fulltime
students is three to four years after earning the master’s degree and five to
six years following the bachelor’s degree, and
Whereas, the
Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, which administers this program,
up to this point has recruited a respectable number of well qualified students
for this program, has four students holding a master’s degree who are making
satisfactory progress in the program, and has 10 out of 30 students in the
department’s two master’s programs who have excellent potential for continuing
in the Ph.D. program, and
Whereas, based
on the need for a program of this nature to have seven years at a minimum to
recruit applicants and reach a point of successfully graduating students, and
the belief that this program is making satisfactory progress, the Committee on
Graduate Studies recommends that the Ph.D. program in Entomology and Applied
Ecology be granted a three-year extension before review for permanent status,
be it therefore
Resolved, that an extension of three years is granted for the provisional status of the Ph.D. Program in Entomology and Applied Ecology, which will then be reviewed for permanent status during the 2007-2008 (red print is a friendly amendment made at Faculty Senate meeting 3-7-05) academic year.
